SUMMARY:MentorLIVE: YIKES!...Get Out of Jail Free? Origins of NASA Reports and Why They’re Crucial to Quality Instruction
DESCRIPTION:YIKES!…Get Out of Jail Free? Origins of NASA Reports and Why They’re Crucial to Quality Instruction\n\nPresenter: J.J. Madison\nHost: Robert Meder\n\nDescription\nCan a NASA (ASRS) report really get you out of jam with the FAA? Why is it even called a NASA report? And why did they come to be in the first place? \nJ.J. Madison has spent more than a decade promoting the importance of filling out\, submitting and accessing NASA reports in flight instruction. \nWhy? When he got to the airlines\, he learned that it was common practice for chief pilots to instruct their pilots to fill out and submit a NASA report\, “if you even think you might have done something wrong.” Plus\, airlines commonly use NASA reports as teaching tools both in initial and recurrent training. \nOnce back in the GA world\, J.J. discovered most GA pilots still don’t trust the FAA enough to fill out and submit NASAs. More importantly\, he found that many CFIs don’t promote using them as a teaching tool much less understand how to fill them out properly. \nThis presentation will: \n\nbriefly discuss the history/origin of NASA reports;\npresent why dissemination of NASA reports makes CFIs\, therefore GA pilots safer;\npresent examples of intriguing NASA reports;\nbriefly discuss the five criteria for filling out a NASA report;\npresent how to correctly fill out and submit a NASA report; and\npresent more examples of intriguing NASA reports.\n\n\n \nPresenter Bio\nJeffrey “JJ” Madison is a Harvard-educated flight instructor\, mentor pilot\, author and airline pilot. A pilot since 1995\, he has over 1\,500 hours dual given and flown into more than 250 GA airports throughout most of the Lower 48. He’s also a helicopter pilot. \nJJ examined thousands of NASA reports for his column\, “Human Factors”\, and is the only aviation safety expert who analyzes NASA reports for the benefit of the pilot community. \nHis book\, YIKES! 100 Smart Pilots and the Dumb Things They Did Yet Lived to Tell About ‘Em is a collection of the best of those columns. He wrote the book so that all proceeds from its sales will help fund aerospace scholarships for Civil Air Patrol squadrons\, under-resourced flight schools and STEM organizations\, through the Victor Kilo Fund\, a non-profit aerospace foundation that he co-founded with his wife. \n\n\n\n \nHost Bio\nRobert “Bob” Meder earned his CFI in 2006 and has since added single-engine and multi-engine instrument certificates. Recently retired from a 40+ year railroad career\, he worked with the FAA on drone regulations while continuing to instruct. With 6\,000+ hours of dual instruction\, Bob specializes in training new flight instructors\, emphasizing risk management and critical thinking. \nA FAASTeam Lead Rep\, he was named District and Regional Flight Instructor of the Year in 2009 and 2010. After nearly a decade as NAFI Chair\, Bob now serves as Chair Emeritus. \n\n  \nRegister For Event
