SUMMARY:MentorLIVE: CFI Spin Training
DESCRIPTION:CFI Spin Training: What You May Not Have Learned\n\nPresenters: Mark King & Karen Kalishek\nHost: Aaron Dabney\n\n \nDescription\nFor many of us\, a quick briefing followed by a couple spins in a Skyhawk constitutes the whole of our 14 CFR 61.183 spin training. While that training is compliant (maybe)\, how much do we really know about the aerodynamics of the stall and spin?  How confident are we in our ability to handle unanticipated spins in our real-world flying? What’s more\, are we passing down accurate information or half-truths and assumptions to our learners? \nJoin Master Aerobatic Instructor Mark King and his special guest\, NAFI Chair and DPE Karen Kalishek\, for a discussion on stalls\, spins\, and the many opportunities for improvement our profession has in teaching these areas. What you don’t know\, can hurt you and your learners. What you do know\, will help you rise above the crowd. \n \nPresenter Bios\nMark King is a four-time Master Certified Flight Instructor with a Gold Seal-Aerobatic\, CFI- Instrument\, Advanced and Instrument ground instructor. He is a southern California native who was born into an aviation family and began flying in 1974. Mark has extensive experience flying in Alaska in a turboprop Quest Kodiak\, has over 1000 hours flying the Beechcraft Bonanza\, and is G1000 qualified. He is a member of SAFE and teaches specialized UPRT Training\, Tailwheel\, Aerobatics and CFI Initial training. Mark was the 2023 Van Nuys FSDO CFI of the Year\, and flies competition aerobatics in his Pitts S2B. \n\n \n \nKaren Kalishek is a Designated Pilot Examiner\, four-time NAFI Master Instructor\, and an FAA Gold Seal Instructor with CFI\, CFII\, MEI\, CFI-G\, AGI\, IGI credentials. SUMMARY:MentorLIVE: When Mistakes Happen
DESCRIPTION:When Mistakes Happen: The Flight Instructor’s Response\n\nPresenter: Erica Gilbert\nHost: Bob Meder\n \nDescription\nStudent pilots make mistakes. Instructors have the responsibility to allow students the opportunity to make mistakes. In fact\, doing things incorrectly is the only way a student can learn. Our response when things aren’t perfect is a huge contributor to student success. Erica Gilbert will talk about how to develop an environment where students are given opportunities to make mistakes\, while also holding them to high standards of safety and performance. \n \nPresenter Bio\nErica Gilbert has a Bachelor of Science in Aviation from Eastern Kentucky University with a minor in social intelligence and leadership. She is assistant chief instructor at Wings Flight Training\, a part 141 school where her role focuses on regulatory compliance and staff CFI mentoring. She independently instructs owner-pilots to get the best use out of their aircraft. Her YouTube channel Aerosafe provides weather analysis for general aviation pilots. This free resource teaches them how to avoid unnecessary weather-related accidents and incidents. \nErica also flies a TBM under Part 91 operations. Her focus is a learner-centered style of teaching with comprehensive\, clear\, and concise instruction that helps learners reach their goals. Professionally\, she advocates for mentorship and community building\, as demonstrated by her service as president of EKU’s chapter of Women in Aviation\, International during her tenure as a student. \nHost Bio\nRobert “Bob” Meder earned his CFI in 2006 and has since added single-engine and multi-engine instrument certificates. Recently retired from a 40+ year railroad career\, he worked with the FAA on drone regulations while continuing to instruct. SUMMARY:MentorLIVE: Teaching AOA Basics
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Angle of Attack Basics\n\nPresenter: Mike “Vac” Vaccaro\nHost: Nathan Ballard\n\nDescription\nOrville Wright patented the first commercial AOA system in 1913. The military has been using Angle of Attack (AOA) successfully for over a half century to teach pilots how to “fly the wing” and manage energy. The FAA recently encouraged the installation of AOA systems in GA aircraft as a means to reduce loss of control mishaps\, the primary cause of fatal mishaps in our community\, that has remained stubbornly consistent since the NTSB data base was established in 1962-63. \nAs AOA systems become commonplace in General Aviation\, flight instructors can benefit from lessons learned in other flying communities. Depending on design\, a properly calibrated AOA system is the only instrument in the cockpit that provides “how hard the wing is working right now” information to the pilot\, including key performance parameters. And all AOA systems when properly calibrated provide much better progressive stall warning than that required by FAR 23. \nWhile airspeed is a key energy parameter\, the speed at which an airplane stall varies constantly with weight and g-load\, whereas critical AOA does not. A key concept is a parameter the military calls “on speed\,” or the AOA used for approach and landing and maneuvering flight—a term that rightly blends the concept of airspeed and AOA\, since AOA and power control airspeed. \nThis brief focuses on how pilots apply AOA\, not engineering concepts; and how AOA can be the best\, most intuitive “energy” instrument in the cockpit. In addition to discussing AOA instrumentation\, this brief will also discuss a simple\, intuitive aural cue developed by the Air Force to allow the pilot to listen to how hard the wing is working\, freeing up eyes for other duty. \n \nPresenter Bio\nMike Vaccaro is part of the FlyONSPEED team\, a non-profit flight research and engineering design group dedicated to reducing loss of control risk in EAB and GA. The team was selected as the first-place winner of the EAA’s Founder’s Innovation Award Prize in 2018\, and Grand Champion in 2021 for their work. The team designs hardware\, conducts flight tests\, and produces education resources for the Experimental Amateur Built community. \nMike is a retired USAF Lt. Colonel\, F-4/F-15 pilot\, Fighter Weapons School instructor\, test pilot\, commander and veteran of three combat deployments. He started flight instructing in GA in 1983 and is a current CFII/ME and airline pilot. He flies a specially instrumented experimental RV-4 for testing angle of attack\, energy management systems and the TLAR decision app from his home airport\, Ruckel Field (FL17) 5 miles east of Eglin AFB in the Florida Panhandle\, where he lives with his wife Theresa. \nHost Bio\nKaren is the NAFI Board Chair\, a Designated Pilot Examiner\, three-time NAFI Master Instructor\, CFI\, CFII\, MEI\, CFI-G\, AGI\, IGI\, FAA Gold Seal Instructor and FAASTeam Lead Representative. She teaches in a range of aircraft and enjoys flying her own RV6. \nKaren is a Major in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP)\, serves as a member of the WINGS Industry Network\, contributes to the FAA Surface Safety Group\, is an FAA Safety Team Lead Representative\, and is active in several other aviation organizations. Karen is the 2019 National FAASTeam Representative of the year. \nShe became active in aviation after success as a senior VP in the banking sector\, as a graduate school professor\, and as President of her own international consulting business. \n\n \nThis month’s MentorLIVE is sponsored by AVEMCO\, the official insurance of NAFI.\n \nRegister For Event
