The Humble Compass: Your Low-Tech Lifeline

Let’s be honest. In a cockpit loaded with GPS moving maps, synthetic vision, and glass panels that practically fly the airplane, the magnetic compass gets about as much attention as the ashtray. It is there. It is required by FAR 91.205. And most pilots treat it like a fire extinguisher — glad it exists but hoping they never need it.

But hope is not a checklist item.

Technology fails. Databases expire. Batteries die. When your GPS goes dark and your heading indicator tumbles, that little whiskey compass might become the most important instrument in the airplane. The question is whether you have ever practiced using it — or merely watched it swing back and forth like a pendulum in a hypnotist’s office.

Let’s fix that.

It Tells the Truth Only When You’re Straight and Level

The most important rule of the magnetic compass is simple: It is reliable only in straight, level, unaccelerated flight. Any bank, pitch change, acceleration, or deceleration and it starts lying to you.

Teach students that whenever they want to confirm a heading, they should first level the wings and stabilize airspeed. Then wait for the compass card to settle before reading it.

Think of it like questioning a nervous witness: Let them calm down before trusting the answer.

Know the Errors: Two Acronyms, Zero Excuses

Two memory aids cover the compass errors students are most likely to encounter.

ANDS — Accelerate North, Decelerate South. On easterly or westerly headings, acceleration causes the compass to indicate a turn toward north, while deceleration causes it to indicate a turn toward south. Neither indication reflects an actual heading change. Recognize the error, ignore it, and reread the compass once the airspeed stabilizes.

UNOS — Undershoot North, Overshoot South. I sometimes teach “OSUN” simply to be different, but UNOS is more common. Either works.

When turning toward a northerly heading, the compass leads the turn. Roll out early —approximately 15 degrees plus half your latitude before reaching the desired heading.

When turning toward a southerly heading, the compass lags. Allow it to pass the desired heading before rolling out, using the same approximate correction: 15 degrees plus half your latitude.

The turning error is greatest near headings of north and south and diminishes as the heading approaches east or west. One practical teaching method is to assign an undershoot or overshoot factor to each 30-degree increment on the compass card, beginning with the greatest correction at north and south and tapering to zero at east and west.

Drill these principles until students can recall them in turbulence with one hand on the yoke.

How to Fly a Compass Heading

Here is a practical sequence for building compass proficiency:

  1. Set the scenario. Before the flight, choose a magnetic heading and have the student fly it using only the compass for two minutes. Cover the heading indicator if necessary. The student’s primary task is simply to keep the wings level.
  2. Establish, then confirm. Use a landmark, the sun, or a GPS ground track to establish the approximate direction. Once the airplane is level and the airspeed is stable, use the compass to confirm the heading.
  3. Make small corrections. The compass is not a real-time instrument — it oscillates and wobbles, particularly in turbulence. Use it for overall heading awareness rather than chasing every movement with continuous corrections.
  4. Practice compass turns. From a known heading, turn to a new heading using UNOS — or OSUN — and then verify the result using GPS or sectional landmarks. Students are often surprised by how accurately the method works when they apply the rules correctly.

The Fire Extinguisher You Should Actually Use

Students may spend 99 percent of their flying careers glancing at the compass only to set the heading indicator — and that is fine. GPS and glass have earned that trust.

But the remaining 1 percent matters.

An avionics failure at night, in IMC, or during a cross-country flight is not the time to discover that the compass might as well be a rearview-mirror ornament.

Build compass proficiency the same way you build any emergency skill: Practice before it is needed, in benign conditions, until the workflow becomes familiar. Every few flights, reserve a few minutes to cover the heading indicator and navigate by compass alone. Make it a game. Make it competitive. Make it stick.

The magnetic compass has been pointing north for more than 800 years. It does not need a software update, an avionics shop, or a subscription.

All it needs is a pilot who knows how to use it.
